EastLink CCTV: debris incidents - always secure your load
VIDEO
Debris is a danger to motorists, and it also puts at risk EastLink and Police personnel who have to retrieve items from the freeway in live traffic conditions.
During September 2019, EastLink's 24/7 control room and incident response teams logged 280 separate debris incidents, comprising all sorts of items large and small, in running lanes and emergency lanes.
Then on Sunday 20 October 2019 there were two serious debris incidents on EastLink, both involving large items and both resulting in damage to other vehicles.
- A mattress fell from a car.
- A roll of carpet appeared to fall from a trailer.
These incidents are a reminder to all motorists:
- ALWAYS SECURE YOUR LOAD
- Choose a suitable vehicle for your load.
- Position and place the load so that it is secure.
- Tie the load down using suitable restraint equipment – it should be ‘rated’ and meet Australian Standards.
- Use a suitable load cover (e.g. a cargo net) to stop small items from being blown from a trailer or ute tray.
- Drive carefully and regularly check your restraints.
This page on the VicRoads website has more information about securing your load.
In an emergency, phone the emergency services on 000.
If you see a hazard on EastLink you can report it by phoning (03) 9955 1550 - that's the number shown on the road signs along EastLink, and it's only for reporting hazards. (Remember, never touch your phone while driving.)
