EastLink CCTV: first scooter caught on EastLink
VIDEO
This video is about the first scooter caught on EastLink. It's a reminder that pedestrians, cyclists and scooters are not allowed on EastLink.
EastLink is Melbourne's safest freeway. Please help us keep it that way.
At approximately 4:25am on Thursday 18 July, the EastLink control room detected a man on a scooter entering EastLink's Melba tunnel. The control room immediately closed the lane, reduced the tunnel speed limit, dispatched an incident response vehicle and contacted the Police.
This is the first time that a scooter has been detected on EastLink, in 11 years of operations.
However, scooters are not the only issue. EastLink's statistics for the year to date are:
- 51 pedestrians
- 4 cyclists
- and now 1 scooter
Some of the key safety messages:
- Pedestrians, cyclists and scooters are not allowed on EastLink
- Once detected, the EastLink control room will dispatch an incident response vehicle and contact the Police
- Remain alert at all times. The unexpected can happen, and when it does, it happens very fast
- Don't allow yourself to be distracted
In an emergency, phone the emergency services on 000.
Now that Help Phones have been removed from EastLink, if you see a hazard on EastLink you can report it by phoning (03) 9955 1550 - that's the number shown on the road signs along EastLink, and it's only for reporting hazards. (Remember, never touch your phone while driving.)
