EastLink CCTV: emergency lanes are for emergencies only

This video is about a trailer that became detached from its truck and rolled over in the emergency lane, spilling its load. It's a reminder that emergency lanes are for emergencies only.

At approximately 11:35am on Tuesday 11 June, a trailer became detached from its truck on EastLink southbound, approaching the Monash Fwy exit ramp.

The loaded trailer continued to travel - by itself - for hundreds of metres before colliding with the roadside concrete barrier and overturning.

The trailer spilled its load of approximately ten tonnes of clay across two lanes.

An EastLink incident response team attended to provide safety coverage for the accident site, clean up the spill, and arrange removal of the trailer.

Luckily, there were no accidents as a result of this incident.

Some of the key safety messages relating to driving and unexpected incidents:

• Emergency lanes are for emergencies only - a vehicle could exit the running lanes unexpectedly.
• Maintain a safe braking distance from the vehicle in front. Adjust this according to driving conditions.
• Remain alert at all times. The unexpected can happen, and when it does, it happens very fast.
• Don't allow yourself to be distracted.
